Is it possible to donate a car to a person in Arizona?

A reader asks…

We’d like to donate a car to a specific person in Arizona (versus a charity). Does anyone know if this is possible (i.e., does Arizona allow for this?).

Great! What kind of documentation? I am in a different state (Louisiana) – and I have to get the Notary Public to notarize the title and fill out a form here in LA; will that suffice? Do I have to know the Kelly Blue Book Value of the car or anything?

You can give a car to whoever you want, but if the recipient is not a charity (recognized and certified), you won’t get any tax break.

Sign the back of title and write up a "gift" bill of sale and that should suffice. Check with the arizona DMV to be sure.

Many or most states do not require a notary.

It is yours! Give it away but I would suggesting writing a bill of sale, selling the car : AS is and put a value on the car. Something as value. If not the dmv will put their value on it and that is what they will pay taxes on. All states vary, so just call to be sure. You don’t need to know kbb because no one can dictate your selling price.

@gena o is correct. You need to “sell” it and write a bill of sale and sell it “as is without any warranty or guarantee”. Make up a low price because when the person goes to register it and they see it was a gift and they didn’t pay anything for it, the DMV will come up with a fair market value for it and make the recipient pay sales tax on that amount.
